Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV)

Short description

The Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), founded in 1973, is a public institution devoted to higher education, and to research and development (R&D) activities. The main scientific and technological domains are information and communication technologies, electric, electronic, mechanical and chemical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, food and agricultural technologies, business sciences and fine arts. The UPV runs its R&D policy towards two aims: On one side, as a young university, the UPV strengths its basic knowledge base by moving its research groups towards the major European research priorities, especially within the European R&D Programmes. On the other hand, it has a special vocation to perform R&D of interest to our industrial environment, looking after being a technological and R&D partner to companies settled in this region.

Nanophotonics Technology Centre at Valencia. The Nanophotonics Technology Centre (NTC) at Valencia is the centre of photonic systems and technology in Spain. The NTC has been recently created as the hub for scientific research, technological development and innovation (R+D+I) in the field of advanced optical technologies and photonic systems for telecommunications and computing. Its mission is to explore and expand existing knowledge, and to create and transfer technology to industry. The NTC facility is hosted by the UPV at its Campus in Valencia city. The NTC is composed by scientists and engineers from several academic research groups in Spain. Skilled scientists and technicians coming from the Agere Systems factory in Madrid have joined the NTC providing professional fabrication services. The NTC is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology and the Valencian Regional Council.

Javier Marti, received the Ingeniero de Telecomunicación degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya, Catalunya, Spain, in 1991, and the Doctor Ingeniero de Telecomunicación degree (Ph.D.) from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Valencia, Spain, in 1994. During 1989 and 1990, he was an Assistant Lecturer at the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya. Since 1991 to 2000, he obtained the positions of Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Telecommunication Engineering Faculty, where he is currently a Full-Professor and leads the Fibre-Radio Group. Recently he has been appointed as Director of the Microphotonics Technology Centre, the national research centre for photonic technologies in Spain. He has authored 7 patents and over 150 papers in refereed international technical journals and leading international conferences in the fields of fibre-radio systems and technologies, access networks, ultra-high bit rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network, advanced optical processing techniques, fibre gratings and planar photonic crystals. He has led many national and international research projects and is the co-ordinator of the IST-OBANET project. He is currently participating in IST-TOPRATE, IST-GANDALF and IST-LASAGNE. Prof. Martí is or has been a member of the Technical Program Committee of several conferences such as ECOC, Microwave Photonics, and several other international workshops. He is also the recipient of several academic and industrial awards in Spain.
